PokerChips.com (ASM) Poker Chip Reviews

Atlantic Standard Molding (ASM) Poker Chips are probably the most popular custom chips on the market today. PokerChips.com is the online retail storefront for ASM. ASM also manufactures casino chips! ASM is probably more famous for its custom poker chips though. The chips are manufactured in the USA and are 100% lead-free. If you want your photo or your logo or your design on a set of high quality custom clay chips, ASM is probably your best option. They have several differnt mold options available and you can choose your own base colors, edge spot patterns, and edge spot colors. Or you can choose solid color poker chips with inlays, hotstamps, or blank. They seem to offer the most flexibility for custom chip buyers. If you are in the market for custom poker chips, ASM should be at the top of your list as they are fantastic poker chips.

It is important to note that ASM uses brass flakes in their chips to give them weight. This is not noticeable on the face of the chip but is noticeable on the edges of the chip (sides). When viewing them in stacks, the chips seems to sparkle a little from the brass flakes. These flakes are used in all ASM colors except for the Day Glo colors that are primarily used for edge spots.

ASM H Mold chips are relatively new as a mold that can be customized for home poker chip buyers. The mold itself is a very classic casino mold that was used on casino chips several decades ago. It has since been reintroduced as an available mold that you can customize through ASM. The mold will support a 7/8 inch inlay but does not have a recessed area. This can lead to problems with spinners where the inlay is raised up slightly causing the chips to not stack properly or "spin" like a top if you spin them on a hard flat surface. The entire face of the chip has a subtle textured finish. These seem to be the heaviest and widest of all of the ASM chips. They sound and feel identical to other ASM chips.

ASM Horsehead Poker Chips are probably the most popular mold in the ASM lineup. It features 16 horseheads that surround the inlay with 2 concentric circles bordering the horseheads. The mold itself is very classy and makes for an excellent custom chip. The entire surface of the chip including the inlay is flat with a cross hatched texture. There does not seem to be any recessed area where the inlay is placed. The mold itself is very clean looking and the inlays are usually very well centered and the printing on the inlays is also centered. Occasionally you will find one that is not, but of all the clay chip manufacturers out there, ASM seems to have good if not the best quality control that I've experienced. They also have a standard policy of shipping some extra chips to you above what you ordered in case there are any defects. This saves you from having to return the chips to be replaced which is very nice.

The inlay area supports a 7/8 inch inlay. The chips are currently available as solids or with a number of edge spot patterns. These chips are a bit lighter and more hollow sounding than Paulson poker chips but once you have them at a table, most people will not notice or will not care. These chips cannot be hot stamped.

ASM Hourglass Mold Poker Chips are the newest mold available in the ASM lineup. It features 30 hourglass shapes molded into the chip with a slight recessed area that measures almost 1 1/8 inch in diameter. It will support inlays sizes of 1 inch or 1 1/16 inch making it the first mold available from ASM that uses inlay sizes larger than 7/8 inch. The entire face of the chip and the recessed area has a textured finish. Because of the recessed area, there should not be any spinner issues like some of the other ASM molds have. These chips should also stack very well. The sound and feel is pretty much identical to the other ASM molds.

ASM Roman Poker Chips are probably my favorite out of the ASM mold lineup. When I first received the chips, I was under the impression that they would feel the same as the Horsehead chips reviewed above. However, that is not the case. Aside from the different mold design, which is spectacular by the way, the chips are slightly smaller in diameter than the horseheads and felt a different than the horseheads. Once I got past the initial comparison, the Roman mold chips really grew on me. Some of it may be due to the fact that there is some excellent history behind the mold. These chips were the featured poker chips used at Teddy KGB's club in the movie "Rounders". That right there is cool enough! I find the mold a timeless classic that will work well with most custom designs.

These chips share many of the same characteristics of the Horsehead chips reviewed above, including a cross hatched surface across the entire face of the chip and brass flakes that are visible on the edges of the poker chips. The seem a little lighter and maybe a tad slicker but are still great chips.
