To begin I suggest deciding what you want your table to have and make a list of the items you will need to build it. If you don't have all the tools, try to borrow them before you go out and buy them. I also did a good bit of research on the various forums and table building sites to determine how to build the table. I also obtained samples of my fabric, vinyl, and foam before purchasing the full amount. This was extremely helpful when shopping for the poker felt and vinyl for the rail because you could sample the actual feel of the material as well as view the colors more accurately.
It is important to prepare your work space for the project beforehand. I built my table in the garage. You want to have something to support the table during the building process whether it is a couple of saw horses or a cheap folding table like I used. Make sure you have plenty of room around the table and make sure you have someone to help you lift the wood if you are unable to do so on your own. Once you have your list of materials, head off to your local hardware store and try to get everything in one trip. Its frustrating to have to stop in the middle of the project because you have to go back to the store for something you forgot.
Finally, relax and have some fun while you embark on this new project. Plug your ipod up to a stereo and grab some cold drinks. Most importantly, be safe! You are dealing with powerful tools that can hurt you and you should take all precautions to make sure you avoid this. I did not think about it ahead of time, but make sure you get some sort of mask and eye protection. There is a lot of sawdust that will be flying around you and you don't want to breathe that stuff in. The work area around you will also be covered in saw dust so make sure you don't have anything around you that you don't want to get a little dusty. Never use a power tool that you don't know how to operate.
